Two of the world’s best finally met in August 2005, two years after Mirko Filipovic publicly challenged heavyweight kingpin Fedor Emelianenko in Japan’s Pride Fighting Championships.

Both fighters entered the bout in their primes, with Emelianenko essentially bringing an undefeated record to the match and “Cro Cop” riding an impressive seven-fight winning streak.

Cro Cop’s public challenge to Emelianenko, coupled with the Croatian’s brutal high-kick knockout of his younger brother, Alexander Emelianenko, made the fight a must-see.

The bout, like many notable title fights in Pride, more than lived up to its billing.

Fedor Emelianenko and Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic‘s meeting at PRIDE Final Conflict 2005, an instant classic that still ranks among the greatest heavyweight fights in MMA history. Emelianenko had already held the PRIDE heavyweight title for two-and-a-half years by the time he made his belt defense against Cro Cop, and entered the match with a PRIDE record of 10-0 with one no-contest. Meanwhile, Cro Cop had earned his shot at Fedor on the strength of a seven-fight PRIDE win streak that included victories over Alexander Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Kevin Randleman, and Mark Coleman.

Though both fighters would later complain that they came into the fight less than 100% healthy, Emelianenko and Filipovic put on a thrilling war for the entirety of the three-round, 20-minute fight.

Cro - Cop

Filipović owed his mixed martial arts success to a combination of elite-level kickboxing and near-impregnable takedown defense, making him one of the most dangerous strikers in history and a prototype for the modern sprawl and brawler. Filipović's signature move was his lightning quick left head-kick, once famously described as "right leg, hospital; left leg, cemetery."[2] His legacy remains as a true legend in mixed martial arts, as well as one of the greatest heavyweights in the history of the sport.[3][4][5][6] Mirko was also a successful amateur boxer. Mirko medalled numerous times in international competition, and was also a member of Croatia's world team when he competed at the 1997 Amateur Boxing World Championships.[7]

Fedor

He has won tournaments and accolades in multiple sports, most notably the Pride 2004 Grand Prix and the World Combat Sambo championship on four occasions, as well as medaling in the Russian national Judo championship.[7]

Emelianenko received acclaim from major publications, including Sports Illustrated,[8] USA Today,[9] and Sherdog.com.[10] Some analysts and fighters consider Emelianenko to be the greatest mixed martial artist of all time.[11][12][13][14][15] He remained undefeated for nearly a decade, during which time he was widely considered the best heavyweight fighter in mixed martial arts.[16]
